The Padded Collar Test: LV Trainer Maxi Low in Black Suede, Worn for a Full Working Day
We ordered the $94.03 LV Trainer Maxi Low in black suede and put it through a working day on wet Rotterdam pavement. The padded collar is the best part; the unlisted insole length is the risk.

Editor score 4.0 / 5
Louis Vuitton's Trainer Maxi is the inflated reading of Virgil Abloh's original LV Trainer, and the black suede version here costs $94.03 rather than the $1,690 the official US site asks for a calf-leather pair. That gap is the entire premise of this category, so the useful question is not whether the shoe is the same object — it plainly is not — but whether the thing in the parcel behaves like a shoe you can wear for eight hours and then walk home in. We ordered it, photographed it in the lightbox, and gave it a full working day on three different sets of feet.
What came out of the parcel
The listing (SKU 7702202853) describes a black low-top with a rounded, oversized silhouette, a gold-tone LV logo at the side, Louis Vuitton lettering along the tongue, a padded collar, a thick black midsole carrying raised floral motifs and a brown lugged outsole, in EU sizes 35–45. Our pair matched that description item by item. Nothing in the parcel contradicted the photos, and the agent's QC images we compared beside the contents showed the same pair, same colour, same side-logo placement.
What the listing does not give you is anything numerical about the inside of the shoe: no insole length, no width, no foot-length conversion. Flat dimensions therefore had to be checked against the size chart we requested through the agent rather than against the listing page, and that is the single biggest reason to slow down before paying.
The shape, and what it does to a hem line
The silhouette is the product. The toe box is high and round, the midsole is deep, and the whole shoe reads bigger than its stated size — the "bread" look the seller's own feature text leans into. Across our three testers, the same pattern repeated: straight-leg denim breaks awkwardly on top of the collar unless the hem is wide, tapered joggers look fine because the ankle is visibly narrow above the bulk, and cropped wide trousers were the only combination all three of us would wear again. If you live in slim jeans, this is a shoe that will fight the rest of the outfit.
The padded collar is the standout
This is where the pair earns its score. The collar is genuinely padded rather than decorative, and none of our testers reported the Achilles rub that a stiff new court shoe usually delivers in the first two hours. One tester with a narrow heel felt light lift at the back until the laces were re-run tighter through the top two eyelets; after that, no slip. There is no lace stopper or bead detail on the laces supplied with our pair, so the fit is adjusted by hand and stays where you tie it.
By hour six the collar had compressed slightly but not collapsed, and the tongue had not migrated sideways — a common failure on bulky low-tops. We would still call this a shoe that is comfortable in a working-day sense rather than an all-day walking shoe: the sole is stiff under the arch and the platform is high enough that the last two hours were noticeable.
Sole, weight and wet pavement
Underfoot, the midsole is the heavy element. The floral motifs are moulded into the sidewall rather than printed on, which is a nicer result than we expected at this price, but the recesses collect pavement grime and need a brush. The brown lugged outsole is the part we trust most: on wet Rotterdam pavement it held on painted lines and shallow puddles where a smooth cupsole would have slid.
Suede is the part we trust least. After a deliberate walk on damp pavement, the nap on the toe box matted and dried a shade darker. It brushed back to roughly 90 percent of its original finish, but this is not a shoe for wet weather, and the listing makes no water-resistance claim we could hold it to.
Details worth auditing before you buy
Three points separate this listing from the official product page, and none of them is hidden — they are simply worth knowing.
- The side logo. The listing specifies a gold-tone LV logo; the official Trainer Maxi carries rubber LV Initials on the tongue, side and back. Gold tone is a deliberate styling choice here, not the official treatment.
- The outsole. The listing describes a brown lugged outsole. Official versions we checked are shown with a contrasting rubber outsole carrying Monogram Flowers, described as EVA or rubber depending on the release.
- The laces. Official Trainer Maxi releases are listed with technical laces and stoppers, and some colourways with beaded laces. Ours are plain black flat laces with no hardware.
None of this makes the shoe bad. It does mean you should buy it for the shape and the price, not for a claim of one-to-one equivalence.

How to size it
EU 35–45 is the only sizing information the listing supplies. Ask the agent for a measured insole length in centimetres and a photo of the size stamp before shipping, then compare that number with a shoe you already own rather than with a conversion table. Our pair sat at the shorter end of what the three testers expect from their usual EU size — one tester with a wide forefoot would have gone up half a size, and the other two would have stayed put. Because the returns route from Europe is effectively closed, that single QC request is worth more than any fit guide.
Care and longevity
Brush the nap after wear, keep the pair away from radiators, and use a suede protector before the first outing rather than after the first mark. The midsole cleans up with a soft brush and mild soap; the suede collar does not, so treat it as the fragile zone. On construction, our pair showed even stitching at the collar and heel tab with no loose threads, but the bond between midsole and upper is the joint we will be watching over the next few months.
Verdict
This is a statement low-top that does the hard part well: the collar is comfortable from the first hour, the outsole grips, and the bulk is intentional rather than accidental. It loses a point for the missing internal measurements, the plain laces, and a brown outsole that departs from the official look. Buy it for the silhouette, request the insole measurement first, and keep it out of the rain.
- How we tested
- Ordered the EU 41 through our agent, photographed both shoes in the 5600K lightbox and compared flat dimensions with the size chart supplied by the agent, since the listing publishes no insole length. Three testers wore the pair through a full working day; one walked wet pavement before the suede verdict.

Does the LV Trainer Maxi Low in black suede run true to size?
The listing only publishes EU 35–45, with no insole length. Our three testers found the pair sat at the short end of their usual size; ask your agent for a measured insole in centimetres before shipping.
Are the laces beaded like the official Trainer Maxi?
No. Our pair arrived with plain black flat laces and no stopper. Official Trainer Maxi colourways are listed with technical laces and stoppers, and some with beaded laces.
What does the $94.03 price include?
The item price only, reduced from $101.63. Agent service fees and international shipping are charged separately, and the listing shows EU 35–45 in stock at the time of ordering.
