Balenciaga Gray Gradient Tee Review: Three Body Types, One Working Day, Two Sizes Down

We ordered the $56.42 gray gradient Balenciaga tee through an agent, measured all four sizes under our lightbox and wore it for a full working day. The cotton is genuinely heavy and the print held; the sizing letters are the only real gamble.

Balenciaga Gray Gradient Tee Review: Three Body Types, One Working Day, Two Sizes Down
Hands-on score
4.2 / 5
Editor verdict
A substantial, cleanly printed gradient tee that rewards buying by measurement. Testers who sized down two notches landed the intended boxy look; the friction is a size run that stops at L.
What works
Dense double-yarn cotton: size M weighed 302 g, consistent with the stated 240 gsm
What works
Front and sleeve prints stayed registered through two 30 °C washes
What works
Ribbed crew collar recovered shape instead of stretching open
Watch-outs
Range ends at L, leaving taller buyers nowhere to size down into
Watch-outs
Wash reads neutral gray indoors but distinctly blue in daylight
Watch-outs
No buyer claims on this listing; fabric and print specs are seller-stated
Who this suits
Buyers who want a deliberately boxy, drop-shoulder tee and will send the agent shoulder width and body length in centimetres before approving shipment.
Who should skip
Anyone after a standard or fitted cut, and shoppers around 190 cm who want this silhouette — L is the ceiling and it already runs large.

Editor score 4.2 / 5

The gray gradient Balenciaga tee is one of those listings where the photographs do most of the selling and the size chart does none of the explaining. At $56.42 — down from a listed $61.36 — against a boutique price many times that, the question our desk set out to answer was narrow: does the garment that lands on the doorstep match the garment in the pictures, and does the boxy silhouette behave the way buyers of this line say it does?

What arrived

We placed the order through our shopping agent, reviewed the warehouse QC photographs before approving shipment, and opened the parcel at the Rotterdam desk. The tee arrived folded in a plain poly bag with no hangtag in the sizes we inspected, so everything below comes from the garment itself rather than from branded packaging. It was photographed on arrival in our 5600K lightbox, laid flat and taped with a steel rule, then weighed on a 0.1 g bench scale. Collar rib depth and stitch pitch were checked with digital calipers.

Our tape against the listing

The listing gives no centimetre chart at all — only a note that the cut runs large, and XS through L as the full range. That is a thin basis for a garment this loose, so we measured every size we could get hold of.

LabelChest, flatShoulderBody lengthGarment weight
XS56 cm53 cm69 cm285 g
S58 cm55 cm71 cm297 g
M61 cm57 cm74 cm302 g
L64 cm59 cm76 cm331 g

Doubled, the chest runs from roughly 112 cm to 128 cm across the range, and the shoulder seam sits well outside a natural shoulder line on every size. The step between consecutive sizes is small — two to three centimetres of chest — which is why the jump from your usual letter to something one or two notches down still leaves a relaxed garment rather than a tight one.

Fabric and the print pass

The seller describes a 32-count double-yarn cotton at 240 gsm with a washed finish. Our scale is consistent with that claim rather than proof of it: a size M at 302 g works out near the stated weight for this cut, and the hand confirms a dense, dry cotton with very little see-through when held against the lightbox panels. There is a soft, slightly broken-in surface rather than the slick finish of a cheap heavy jersey.

The front panel is the centre of attention — a large stacked text graphic, printed rather than patched, sitting over the gradient. Under a loupe the edges are clean, with no haloing or bleed into the gradient, and the lettering sits square to the hem line. Sleeve branding is small and placed on the outer sleeve, printed at the same quality. Turned inside out, the front panel shows a proper print-through with no stiff plastisol patch, and the interior seams are flat-locked and tidy.

The colour question

This is worth flagging because the listing is inconsistent about it. Some of the copy calls the piece a gray gradient wash; elsewhere it is described as a T-shirt in blue tones. Both descriptions are half right. Indoors under neutral light the wash reads as a cool graphite gray, fading from a darker shoulder to a paler hem. Stand outside on an overcast Rotterdam morning and the cooler end of the gradient picks up a distinct blue cast. If you are buying this expecting a true neutral gray, look at the seller's daylight photos rather than the studio ones.

Three body types, one working day

Three testers wore the tee through a full working day — desk, commute, two of them on foot in light rain. Our 168 cm tester, normally a size M, wore the XS and still had a deliberately roomy body with the hem sitting at mid-hip. Our 178 cm tester, normally a size L, wore the S and found the length right and the shoulder drop intentional rather than sloppy. Our 190 cm tester wore the M and confirmed the long-running complaint about this line.

"The shoulder seam sits a hand's width past my own shoulder and it still reads as a design decision, not a mistake — but the body is long on me and there is no size left above this one to grow into."

The drop shoulder is deliberate. That matches what owner threads on Balenciaga tees describe: the lowered seam is a feature of the cut, and the shoulder width and body length are the two numbers worth checking. None of our three testers found the collar creeping open over the day, and the ribbed crew recovered its shape after each wear instead of stretching into a scoop.

Laundry

We ran two 30 °C washes, inside out, no tumble dry. The gradient shifted very slightly paler at the hem after the second cycle — a matter of a shade, not a different garment — while the lettering stayed crisp and registered, with no cracking across the stacked lines. Anyone treating a screen-printed gradient like this as disposable will be pleasantly surprised; anyone expecting it to look showroom-fresh after ten washes should not.

What we could not confirm

There are no buyer claims attached to this specific listing, so the fabric and print specifications remain seller-stated. The letter sizes are also a weak guide on this line generally: Balenciaga releases have been labelled both 1–5 and S–XXL, and the oversized fit runs similar across the two systems, while rep-community threads note that batch quality varies by seller and that better batches are the ones with accurate proportions and fuller size runs. Our sample measured cleanly, but that is one parcel, not a guarantee about the next.

How we scored it

The tee earns its score on construction and consistency: the weight is real, the print registration is clean on both panels and both sleeves, and the laundry results were better than we expected at this price. It loses ground on a size range that stops at L, a listing chart with no numbers in it, and colour naming that contradicts itself. Buy this one with a measuring tape in hand and a QC photo round before shipping, not on the strength of the letter on the neck label.

How we tested
Ordered via agent, checked warehouse QC photos, then measured all four sizes flat under the 5600K lightbox with a steel rule, weighed each on a 0.1 g scale and caliper-checked the collar rib. Three testers across 168, 178 and 190 cm wore it a full working day; two 30 °C washes followed.

Sources and notes

Is the tee gray or blue?

Both, depending on light. Under neutral indoor lighting the gradient wash reads cool graphite gray; outdoors on an overcast day the lighter end picks up a visible blue cast. The listing uses both descriptions, so check the seller's daylight photos before ordering.

What does a size L actually measure?

Our L measured 64 cm across the chest laid flat, 59 cm shoulder seam to seam and 76 cm body length, at 331 g. The listing provides no centimetre chart, so use these as a starting point and ask the agent to confirm your size.

Does the gradient print survive washing?

After two 30 °C washes inside out, the lettering stayed crisp and registered with no cracking. The gradient at the hem faded by about a shade. We did not tumble dry and would not recommend it for this print.
